Tesla Adds More Speed to Model S and X with 100kWh Battery Pack

Model S will now accelerate from 0–60 mph in just 2.5 seconds

Tesla Motors and its CEO Elon Musk are working around the clock to improve the company’s offerings, and its latest one surely won’t disappoint customers. The electric car maker has upgraded its battery to 100kWh, making its Model S the fastest electric car in the world. Model S can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 2.5 seconds in Ludicrous Mode.

Model S was already the fastest four-door sedan amongst cars that are worth less than $200,000, and reached 0-60mph in just 2.8 seconds in Ludicrous Mode. But now, the new 100kWh battery pack would make Model S even faster. It will also become the first electric car to cross the 300 mile per charge range barrier, with the range extended to 315 miles on a single charge. All Model S will now come equipped with the Ludicrous Mode by default since Tesla rolled out the feature last year.

Tesla compared its Model S P100 D with its competitors and said, “both the LaFerrari and the Porsche 918 Spyder were limited run, million dollar vehicles and cannot be bought new. While those cars are small two seaters with very little luggage space, the pure electric, all-wheel drive Model S P100D has four doors, seats up to 5 adults plus 2 children and has exceptional cargo capacity.”

The Model S P100D with Ludicrous mode has a $134,500 price tag. With the inclusion of the new battery pack, Model S has eight variants available, with the cheapest one, the Model S 60, available for $66,000. Elon Musk said that the new car is a milestone for the automobile industry. He believes it’s safe to assume that the company’s “electric car is now the fastest car in the world.”

The 100kWh battery pack is also available for Tesla SUV Model X for $135,500. The seven seater SUV, which is already the fastest of its kind, will get even quicker with the new battery pack. It will accelerate from 0-60mph in just 2.9 seconds, compared to 3.2 seconds that it previously took with the P90D Ludicrous variant. The powerful battery pack will also increase the SUV’s driving range to 289 miles on a single charge.

Tesla has given an update option on both the models. Existing owners can upgrade from P90D Ludicrous Mode to P100D by paying $20,000. People who have ordered their P90D can get the upgrade by paying an additional $10,000. The old battery pack needs to be recycled, which is why it’s more expensive for existing customers to upgrade their car, according to the company.

Elon Musk said it was difficult for the company to build a new battery pack with an additional 10kWh. The new battery pack is powered by Panasonic cells, which were also used in previous Tesla vehicles. For now, the company will limit the production of its 100kWh battery pack to 200 per week. These battery packs will only be available for Ludicrous Mode.

P100D is too expensive for most people. But Tesla has said that the success of its P100D models will help the company boost production of its much awaited Model 3, the cheapest Tesla car yet. Sale of P100D will help the company raise money, which it intends to invest in the production of Model 3 in order to meet delivery targets.

Tesla has a history of delaying car deliveries and missing its targets. Despite this, the company has planned to produce 500,000 cars per year by 2018. The electric car maker delivered 14,402 vehicles so far this year, missing out on the 17,000 target. However, Tesla said it is on track to deliver 50,000 cars in the next two quarters.

With the increased demand of Model 3, the company has been under intense pressure to increase its production and deliver the cars on time. Telsa is working on the GigaFactory, which it hopes will help increase production efficiency. It even raised $1.5 billion in stock sale to help the company finance its Model 3 production.

Sale of electric cars in the US has been slow due to low oil prices. Hence, Mr. Musk wanted to create a car that is affordable for most customers and also attractive at the same time. He wanted to create demand for electric cars without keeping the energy prices in mind, and Model 3 has certainly done that.

Moreover, Tesla has been in the spotlight due to a fatal car crash in May, in which a Model S owner, Joshua Brown, was killed while the car was on autopilot mode. Regulators are currently examining the autopilot feature. Elon Musk said that a new update, which would further improve the autopilot feature, is in the works.
