apple ps4 xbox one controller

Apple is finally enabling the support of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One controllers on Apple devices. Following the new tvOS update on the Apple TV, users will be able to control the device with their favorite controller.

And it doesn’t just stop with the Apple TV. Following the iOS 13 update, users will be able to connect PlayStation 4 and Xbox One controllers to their iPhones or iPads. iOS 13 was announced earlier today at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2019). The conference started on Jun 3 and will conclude on Jun 7 and is happening at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California.

So what practical use could this additional feature serve? Well, for now just think about how much more enjoyable it would be to be able to play Fortnite on your phone with a controller of your choice. But for Apple, they might have a bigger picture on sight.

Earlier this year, Apple announced the Apple Arcade service. This is a subscription based gaming service that brings hundreds of high quality exclusive game to Apple devices. Let’s dig a little deeper into this.

Apple Arcade

Apple Arcade is a subscription based gaming service that is set to be launched in the fall of 2019. The service brings several exclusive premium quality mobile games to Apple devices. Apple is collaborating with several highly reputed developers and the company has reportedly been spending quite a pretty penny to maintain the exclusivity of these games to its devices. A report by Financial Times brings this figure to around $500 million. That’s a lot of money, so will Apple’s gamble pay off? Let’s look at what’s Apple actually spending on.

Apple Arcade will reportedly consist of both exclusive and non-exclusive titles. But the developers of the exclusive games have been compensated so as not to release their games on other competing platforms and services, such as Android. They can however be released on PC or other consoles like Sony’s PlayStation 4 after a couple of months.

It is clear that Apple is trying to incentivize gamers into switching to/buying Apple devices. We’ll have to wait and see if this strategy pays off. For now, here’s an introductory video by Apple, where they give an overview of the ambitious plan:

Steam Link App Also Available On iOS

In other news related to Apple and gaming, the Steam Link app is finally available on iOS. The app lets users stream their Steam games to their devices. The app has previously been available on Android.

The App was initially submitted by Valve almost a year ago. But it was rejected by Apple, with the company citing business conflicts. Apparently Valve has resubmitted the app and it has now been approved for the App Store.

The Steam Link app has a few requirements. Firstly, it requires a device running iOS 11 or higher. And it obviously requires a computer running Steam (either on Windows, Mac or Linux). Finally, the computer that is running Steam and the mobile device it is streaming to must both be connected to the same local network.
