Surge protectors are electrical devices that protect your expensive electronic equipment from frying up. Voltage surges can occur for a number of reasons. But they almost always result in damaged electronics. This is where a surge protector comes handy. It acts as a firewall between your electronic device and the power line. Any time it detects an alarm in the voltage level, it sacrifices its own component, ensuring the safety of your expensive devices.
In this article, we will be looking into some of the best surge protectors available in the market today. So, without further ado, lets get going!

How Surge Protectors Work
Now that we’ve finished reviewing some of the best surge protectors in the market today, let us look at how they actually work. It is basically a device that blocks excessive voltage once the input voltage has exceeded a certain limit. This limit is set at around 330 volts, 400 volts or 500 volts. In the United States, the nominal delivery voltage is 120 volts whereas for the rest of the world, it is 220 volts. So a cutoff point set at 330, 400 or 500 volts makes sense, since that’s not too high.
One thing most of us fail to realize is that the electrical grids that we draw power from weren’t originally designed to handle electronics. They were designed to handle big motors that could actually handle a few spikes and surges in the input. But in recent years our electronics have gotten extremely complicated. And while most of them have some sort of an in-built mechanism to handle small irregular spikes in the input voltage, they have their limit. This is where a surge protector steps in as the hero. In case of a alert in the input voltage, it blocks the current from flowing into the electronic device. And often times, it actually plays a sacrificial role as it ends up destroying its own component in the process of saving the user thousands.
Most of them use a type of circuitry known as metal oxide varistors or MOVs. An MOV absorbs all voltages above the clamping point. Eventually, these circuits burn away after a long time. The time it takes to die actually depends on the area it is being used at. In a place that is prone to voltage surges, it may die out in a few months, where as at a place with a relatively stable voltage input, it may last much longer. There are various kinds of protectors and some of the more expensive ones perform better and longer and are ideal for protecting the most expensive electronics such as expensive audio systems.
So how exactly can one tell how long a protector is going to last? Simple. You look at the advertised Joule rating of the product. Say you have an environment that regularly suffers from erratic voltage surges. In this place a protector rated at 1000 joules will last twice as long as one rated 500 joules. But since MOVs don’t degrade in a linear manner, you can never tell exactly how long a particular it will last. But still, it’s always a good idea to invest on a good protector to keep your expensive devices safe. Better safe than sorry is what they say.
Some good companies actually offer insurance on the equipment being connected to their surge protectors. These devices are more expensive but given the confidence of an insurance, it is more suitable for office environments. A regular one will work just fine in household environments.
So that was our article on the best surge protectors you could buy in 2019. We reviewed a total of 7 devices and we ended the article with a short description of how these devices work.
We hope this article helped you make a decision!
