How to Setup and Use AirPlay on Roku

If you are an Apple user looking to screen mirror on your Roku, you can use the AirPlay feature. Luckily, most of the Roku devices have in-built AirPlay settings. So, you can share and stream any content on a bigger screen of your Roku TV effortlessly. 

But sometimes AirPlay might not work on your Roku devices. This can happen when you do not set up both devices properly. So, in this article, let us guide you with a step-by-step guide on how to do it.

How to AirPlay on Roku?

Basically, AirPlay is a screen mirroring feature on Apple devices such as iPhone/iPad and Mac. To use it, you must set your Roku TV on AirPlay mode first. Then, when both devices are on the same Wi-Fi, you can connect your iPhone/Mac to your Roku devices.

Before you begin with the steps, we recommend you check if your Roku and Apple device is compatible with this feature on their official website. 

Set Roku TV on AirPlay Mode

You can check if your Roku TV is in AirPlay mode from Settings. If it isn’t, your Apple devices will not identify your device. Therefore, you must turn on the AirPlay feature. Also, if you want your Roku to connect to AirPlay even when the device is off, you can enable the Fast TV start or Fast Start feature.

Turn On AirPlay

  1. On your Roku remote, press Home key.
  2. Select Settings.

  3. Locate and open Apple AirPlay and HomeKit.

  4. Highlight AirPlay and click for the On option.

Turn On Fast TV Start

  1. Using the Home key on your Roku remote, open Home Screen.
  2. Then, choose Settings.

  4. Click on Fast TV Start.
    Click on Enable Fast TV Start to check the box
  5. Click on Enable Fast TV Start to check the box.

Connect Your Apple Device With Roku

Now, you can connect your Apple devices to your Roku. You can find the default option of AirPlay on your iPhone/iPad and Mac. Besides you can also pair them together with other applications. Let’s check it out in more detail below.

From Control Center

The quickest way to use AirPlay is from the control center of Apple Devices. You can find the default Screen Mirroring icon and use it. Also, if you have allowed control center access when locked, you can control AirPlay. Here are the steps for your iPhone and Mac.

On iPhone

  1. Unlock your smartphone.
  2. For iPhone X and later, drag the screen from the Upper-right corner.(For the iPhone series below X, swipe up from the Bottom to the center of your screen.)
  3. Locate the Screen Mirroring icon and tap on it.

  4. Your iPhone will look for available devices. Choose your Roku device.

  5. You should see the AirPlay Passcode screen on your Roku TV.

  7. Tap OK to confirm.
  8. You can see your phone screen on the Roku TV.

On Mac

  1. From the top-right menu bar, choose Control Center.
  2. Find the Screen Mirorring icon and click on it.

From Photos

If you want to project only specific screens on your Roku directly, you can do it from some Applications. For Instance, you might want to share your photo album or videos only on your Roku. Or, it could be a show from the streaming apps. Thus, if you are concerned about privacy, you can use AirPlay from the application itself.

Below, we have mentioned the steps for using AirPlay from photos for your reference. However, some AirPlay integrated apps are Apple Music, Spotify, HBO Max, etc.

On iOS

  1. Open Photos.
  2. Now, locate and tap on the photo/video for screen mirroring.
  3. Tap on the screen once for the Photos menu.
  4. Then, tap on the Share icon at the bottom left corner.

  5. Tap on AirPlay and choose your Roku.

On Mac

  1. Open Photos.
  2. Now, click on the photo/video for screen mirroring.
  3. Then, select the Share icon at the bottom-left.
  4. Choose AirPlay and click on your Roku.
  5. Follow the on-screen process to pair.
