Motorola is bringing Motorola One to the US. The mid-range Android phone will debut in the US at Best Buy on Nov 11. Motorola One was first announced in August for markets in Asia, Europe and Latin America, selling for €299 or £270. In the US it will be available for $399. Pre-ordering will be available starting on Nov 9 at the Best Buy website.
Motorola One is a mid-range phone running the Android One OS. Although Android One started off as an operating system for low-powered devices, Google now presents it as a pure version of Android. Another example of a device running on Android One is the Nokia 8 Sirocco. The only device running a purer version of Android is perhaps Google’s own Pixel 3.
Motorola One will come with some pre-installed Motorola only software. But it will be free of those annoying hard-installed third-party apps. This phone will not be available in contracts, meaning buyers will have to purchase an unlocked phone for the full price. And since it runs on GSM technology, American buyers will be able to use Motorola One with AT&T or T-Mobil networks (or any of their prepaid branches such as Cricket Wireless or Metro). Verizon and Sprint networks, which operate on CDMA technology, will not be able to support this phone.
Here’s an unboxing video of Motorola One:
Many consider Motorola One to be the direct successor to Moto G6 Plus, although the non-HD display has been a major downer for most. In appearance, the Motorola One almost appears to be an iPhone X clone, with a notched 5.9-inch (720×1520) display. Inside it packs a Qualcomm 625 processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage and a 3000 mAh battery. It has a 13-megapixel main camera and a 8-megapixel front facing camera. This is of course a budget phone. There’s no comparing it to the iPhone X. But it does have a headphone jack. So there’s that.
For $399, the Motorola One is an excellent phone, with a good camera, excellent battery life and an overall great performance. But the software that runs this device, the Android One OS, has to be its greatest feature. Android One will get regular security updates all the way up till 2020, meaning that your phone will be safe from breaches. That guarantees a long lifespan for this phone.
The Future of Motorola
Motorola was one of the most popular mobile phone manufactures back in the early 2000s, along with brands such as Nokia. The company, which was founded in 1928, struggled to keep up with the advent of smartphones. It lost $4.3 billion between the years 2007 and 2009 and eventually broke off into two halves in 2011. One is the direct successor to the original Motorola Inc, Motorola Solutions. The other, Motorola Mobility was first sold to Google in 2012, and was later acquired by Lenovo in 2014.
And so, the company that built its success on devices such as the popular flip phone Razr, now manufactures amazing budget smartphones. Moto G6 and Moto Z3 are excellent examples. These are phones that supports hardware upgrade via modules that attach magnetically to the back. In fact the Moto Z3 promises to be the first smartphone to support 5G connection (when it will be available), via an upgraded module.
