As we slowly approach the end of 2019, 2020 has a lot for gamers to look forward to. A lot of highly anticipated games such as Cyberpunk 2077 and The Last of Us Part II are scheduled to come out. But there’s something even more important. The next gen consoles.
Microsoft has already revealed that its next generation gaming console, the Xbox Scarlett will be hitting the shelves during the holiday seasons of 2020. And while Sony is yet to make such revelations, we can expect them to release their next console, the PlayStation 5 around the same time. But while nothing has been said about the release of the PS5, a lot about its specifications are now known.
Like AMD’s Zen 2 architecture based CPUs. It is already known that both the Xbox Scarlett and the PS5 will be coming with AMD’s Zen 2 CPUs. And that is expected to be a big gamechanger for developers who will build for these consoles. One developer revealed that most of the bottlenecks that arise for developers in current gen consoles is rarely with the GPU. It is CPU limitation that hinders better development.
What A Better CPU Can Do
In an email Q&A with Gamingboth, one developer from Take Five’s Lornsword: Winter Chronicle, had the following to say:
“On current generation consoles the bottleneck is the CPU, most of the time, not the GPU, at least for the type of games we are making. If we want more precise simulations, even more advanced rendering techniques, then we do need faster CPUs. The GPU doesn’t do everything and many data elements it is computing have been decided, put together, culled, sorted and worked on by the CPU before rendering.”
The Zen 2 CPUs will definitely be an upgrade for PlayStation. And we can expect to see some very impressive graphics and gameplay come out of the PS5 as a result.
PlayStation 5: All We Know So Far
The PS5 will be the next big installment to Sony’s PlayStation console. It will be the follow up to Sony’s PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro. Since both the PS4 and PS4 Pro cost around $399, we can expect the PS5 to be the same price, if not slightly more. But this price range is quite the bargain considering how you will be able to play all the games that come out for the next 10 years or so with this initial investment.
Nothing has been said about the release date of this console. Microsoft confirmed the release date of its next console earlier this year. The Xbox Scarlett will be hitting the shelves during the holiday seasons of 2020. Given the huge competition between Xbox and PlayStation, we can say that Sony will not lag behind. Both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 were released around the same time in November, 2013. The holiday seasons have always been the time of choice for console releases. We can estimate that Sony will be releasing the PlayStation 5 around November 2020. It will definitely compete with Microsoft’s Xbox Scarlett.
