It seems like 2020 started with a bang for Rockstar Games as Take-Two Interactive releases its latest earnings report. In the third fiscal quarter ended on December 31, 2019, Red Dead Redemption 2 sold nearly 30 million copies. However, the share price plummeted after Take-Two published a disappointing earnings forecast for 2020. Moreover, one of the co-founders of Rockstar Games, Dan Houser, announced his departure in March 2020.
Some of the biggest bread earners for Take-Two Interactive in 2019 were Grand Theft Auto Online and Grand Theft Auto V, Red Dead Redemption 2, Red Dead Online, NBA 2K20, Borderlands 3 and The Outer Worlds. Most PC gamers swear by these games and can go on and on about their favorite one from the list.
The good news
Sales of RDR2 had crossed the 17 million mark at the end of 2018. But the PC version of the game that launched in 2019 contributed to the skyrocketing sale figures. Like GTA 5, releasing extra downloadable content for RDR2 helped gain more players and retain older ones. But in comparison to GTA V, RDR2’s 30 million figure seems minuscule. GTA V remains the undisputable, best-selling game with 120 million copies sold.
Moreover, the cell-shaded shooter looter RPG, Borderlands 3, has almost touched the 8 million mark. Although Epic Games Store exclusivity was a massive obstacle for the sales, it managed to sell like hot cakes in the first week. The game is expected to continue selling well if Gearbox regularly releases fresh content like the Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jackpot DLC.
…and the bad
The successful sales coincided with bad news for Take-Two’s Rockstar Games label as Dan Houser, co-founder, announces about his departure. The mastermind behind Bully, Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2, and Max Payne 3 will leave the firm on March 11, 2020. However, his brother, Sam Houser, will continue serving as the President of Rockstar Games. Furthermore, the fact that the company warned about weaker sales for the rest of 2020 resulted in a 13% fall in stock price.
