Download Quota Exceeded For This File

Google Drive acts as a storage house for all your backup files and folders. You can easily upload, view, download, and share your files. But, in some cases, if your server has high traffic or an exceedingly big file, you might run into the ‘Download Quota Exceeded for this file’ error.

Additionally, this can also happen when too many people download a particular file. Google does this as a preventive measure to stop files from being misused. It places a lock that prevents your files from getting downloaded and viewed.

Nonetheless, there are several methods you can use to bypass this file error. Let us head on over to learn more about the causes and fixes for this issue.

Why Does the Download Quota Exceeded for This File Occur?

Here are some of the common reasons why this error occurs in your Google Drive:

  • Google Admin has shared the file or folder link in a public network causing high traffic in the server.
  • If file downloads significantly jump up in a short period, downloads or viewing can only happen after 24 hours or more.
  • If the file or folder is massive and surpasses the daily download limit of 750 GB.

How to Bypass the ‘Download Quota Exceeded’ Error?

It is still possible to download files and bypass the ‘Download quota has exceeded’ error. You can follow these methods and make quick changes to your Google Drive so you can download and view your files.

Make a File Copy for Owned or Shared Files

When you make a copy of the file, there won’t be much traffic in comparison to the original. The copy file gets stored in your Google Drive. So, it is easier to view and download on your devices.

Here is a step-by-step process of how you can make a copy of a Google Docs file.

  1. Open your Google Drive account and Sign in.
  2. Go to the link of the shared file/folder.
  3. Open the file Navigate to the menu and go to File. You can also right click the file.
  4. Scroll down until you see Make as Copy.Make a copy
  5. Rename and select the location.
  6. Click on Ok.
  7. Locate your copy saved in your drive.
  8. Go to the menu bar, select File.
  9. Click on Download and choose the format.

Alternatively, you can also share the link to the copied file to reduce the traffic on a single link.

For Public Files: Change Google Drive file URL

If you are in a public server, then the ‘Download Quota Exceeded Error’ can be recurring as there can be a lot of users in the drive folders.

However, there is an easy fix to this solution as you will only have to do minor tweaks in the URL of the file.

  1. Locate your file and Go to the file’s URL address at the address bar.
  2. Select from /drives to /folders and delete.Drives to folder
  3. Replace the field with “file/d” and hit enter.
  4. You will now get a screen that says, “No Preview Available.”
  5. Go to the menu by clicking on the three-dotted icon on the right-hand side.
  6. Click on Add Star.
  7. Open up a new window tab, and go to the Google Drive homepage.
  8. Click on New and create a new folder.
  9. Give a name to the folder and hit on the Create button.
  10. Go to the starred section on the left-hand side panel.
  11. Right-click on the file and choose to Add shortcut to Drive.shortcut to drive
  12. Go to the folder you created just now and select it.
  13. Click on Add Shortcut.
  14. After creating this shortcut, go to the folder you just made and right-click on it.
  15. Click on Download, and your file will now download as a zip file.

Note: This part will take a while, depending upon the file size you are trying to download. The download will also depend upon the speed of your internet connection.
